Ethel Mitchell-Yard (1905-1990) was born on December 28, 1905 in Charleston, South Carolina. Ethel was the 4th child born to Isaiah and Emma Mitchell. In 1907, the Mitchell family moved to New York City in Harlem. At that time, Ethel was 2 years of age. She and her siblings grew up in Harlem where they attended school.

In 1923, Ethel met and married Harold Yard, a Navy Seaman from Barbados. They had 3 sons, Clifford Harold, Robert De Costa, and Edward Nathaniel. In 1938, Harold died at the age of 40 from liver ailment, living Ethel to continue raising her sons.

Ethel was a devout catholic and believed in family.  She lived until the age of 85.
