The Martins were of Black and Native American ancestry. Louvenia was a mulatto mid-wife and delivered both black and white children in the area of Washington County, Missouri. She would receive usually about $2.50 for each delivery and people would come with a horse or a horse and wagon when they needed her.  She was the wife of Patrick Murphy, mother of Ella, Susa, Nellie Belle, Elza (Blanche), Joseph, and step-mother to Clarence Murphy.
