*THIS ESTATE, UPPER HUNDREDS, LYING IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY,                 
WAS BROKEN UP AND SLAVES LEFT EN MASSE, AFTER THE 1ST                   
BOMBARDMENT OF CITY POINT ON MAY 19TH. MEN LEFT ON GUN                  
BOATS & WOMEN/CHILDREN TAKEN TO EPPES ISLAND ESTATES IN                 
PRINCE GEO.  THIS AREA WAS CONSIDERED TO BE WITHIN ENEMY                    
LINES AND BECAME A DEPOT AND THEY ESCAPED FROM                  
SOUTHSIDE OF JAMES RIVER.           ABOUT 69 BLACKS FROM ESTATES        
WERE REMOVED BEFORE THE EVACUATION OF WESTOVER BY GEN.                  
MC CLELLAN.  GEN. PECK'S ORDER SHIPPED THEM DOWN JAMES RIVER.                   

                    
**THEY WERE CARRIED OF BY NAVAL AND LAND FORCES DURING THE                  
YANKEE OCCUPATION OF THE JAMES RIVER FROM MAY THRU AUGUST.                      

THEY NUMBERED 106, EXCEPT CHARLES LEWIS (ISLAND) WHO HAD A                  
SLIGHT HERNIA...  NONE OF THEM RETURNED TO SERVICE OF RICHARD                   

EPPES, PLANTER - REPORT LETTER BY HIM ON MAY 26, 1863, PETERSBURG

NOTE:  EPPES WAS REQUESTED BY ARCHIBALD GLOVER, COMMISSIONER OF THE REVENUE 
TO HAND IN A LIST OF THE SLAVES THAT HE LOST.EPPES' LETTER WAS FILED IN AUD
ITOR'S OFFICE.                   
                    
NOTE:  THE EPPES/RANDOLPH/JEFFERSON/LEWIS                   
FAMILIES INTERMARRIED AND SOMEHOW EPPES                 
HAD SLAVES WITH LEWIS SURNAMES IN 1862.
