This family originated and was enslaved in West Feliciana Parish in the
Bayou Sarah area before it was lost to the Mississippi River in a flood. Family
legend, according to my paternal grandmother Beatrice Carter Forbes, stated that
her grandfather, "Ed" Carter was a horstie ( the person that took care of the
horses and bridled them with either a saddle or wagon). His wife, the former
Alice Johnson was a house servant. After the Civil War and before 1900, most
of the family migrated to East Baton Rouge Parish and lived in the old Bird
Station area.

According to my grandmother, Ed had other brothers and sisters but they had
been sold off during slavery and were using different surnames. The family had
not kept up with them for some reason or another. These surnames have been
lost in time.
